Re:
RFP for Painting Rain Barrels
As part of the ORRE’s Water Conservation Campaign, ORRE is requesting proposals from artists to design
and paint plastic rain barrels. ORRE is known to celebrate art in public places. The rain barrels will be
placed throughout Oak Ridge’s legacy shopping areas and public places. The decorated, bright presence of
rain barrels on public display will reinforce the message of the ORRE’s conservation efforts.
Between 25 and 40 rain barrels will be installed in legacy shopping center, Grove Center and throughout
Oak Ridge Public Spaces promoting sustainability and water conservation.
By incorporating the use of community artwork to foster energy conservation awareness among its residents
ORRE hopes to bring energy conservation awareness to the public and to help alter the culture of
consumption in which we live. Oak Ridge, home to the Manhattan Project, provides a significant, historical
perspective as Oak Ridge moves toward becoming a sustainable community
These recycled containers painted by local artists and public school students will become a permanent visual
art display and a constant reminder for individuals to be aware of the Oak Ridge’s efforts at recycling.
This year, to promote our commitment toward water conservation, ORRE will use part of our membership
funds to purchase rain barrels to place in our legacy centers and public spaces to catch and recycle rain
water.
Design proposals must be received by October 28, 2011 for review. You may submit more than one
proposal for possible approval.
Artists’ work will also receive recognition in many of our local publications, posters and professionally
designed brochures.
So, You Are Invited to Make History!
Would you like to be one of the artists to be part of this project? ORRE is requesting proposals from artists
who wish to participate in this public art event. Artists whose designs are selected for exhibition will be
provided with a plastic rain barrel.
The rain barrels will be on display 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. They must be designed, painted and
executed with functional accessibility and weather conditions taken into consideration.
